Ballcocks The mechanism that controls the flow of water into a gravity-operated toilet tank. The ballcock is controlled by the float mechanism floating in the water in the tank. When the toilet is flushed, the float drops and opens the ballcock, allowing water to enter the tank and/or bowl. The float rises as the water level in the tank is restored, and shuts off the ballcock when the tank is completely filled. Also referred to as a float valve.
Ball Passage Refers to the size of a ball which can pass through the trapway of a toilet. Standards are established based on minimum size ball passage. Ball passage also relates to trapway size. Generally speaking, the size of the trap will be 1/8" larger than the maximum size ball which can pass through it. Bidet A personal hygiene fixture with hot and cold water supply for genital and perineal cleanliness. Bisque Unglazed areas of vitreous china fixtures, such as inside the tank or on the bottom of the bowl foot, have a bisque finish. |

Internal pitting corrosion of copper pipes is a rare but costly problem that leads to the formation of pinhole leaks. Although the factors that cause this problem are mostly unknown, it is well recognized that the chemistry of the water traveling through the pipes can influence the formation and propagation of pits. Pinhole leaks are a major concern to homeowners as they may: be costly, given the effort required to find and repair each leak result in highly variable amounts of water damage per occurrence lead to loss of water resources from undetected leaks in service laterals lead to growth of mold and mildew result in higher premiums for or cancellation of homeowner insurance |

Open-shop apprenticeship woes |

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — A California court has dealt a blow to an open-shop apprenticeship program run by the California Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors. The court ruled that the California Apprenticeship Council had not followed its own rules when it approved expansion of the open-shop program statewide in 1998. The PHCC program was approved as a state-recognized apprenticeship program in Sacramento County in 1994. The ruling in Sacramento County Superior Court only affects the expansion of the program outside Sacramento County. California PHCC will continue to run the program, said the group’s executive vice president, Steve Lehtonen, but its students will not be recognized by the state as apprentices. They will technically be “trainees.” The programs also lose state education funding. The students will not be allowed to work on public works projects. |

{MAINTENANCE WORKERS WARNED – DON’T TAKE THE GAMBLE WITH ASBESTOS “Don’t take a gamble with your life” is the message to maintenance workers from Steve Coldrick, Director of the Health and Safety Executive’s Disease Reduction Programme. These workers, including plumbers, carpenters and builders, account for more than one quarter of the 3,5000 asbestos-related cancer deaths each year. To raise their awareness of the dangers of working with asbestos, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) today launched its “Don’t take the gamble” campaign. More than half a million non-domestic premises and houses still contain some form of the material, posing a real threat to unwary maintenance workers. These workers are at risk because they may unknowingly drill or cut into material that could contain asbestos and breathe in the deadly fibres. At the launch of the campaign at the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health’s annual conference, Steve Coldrick said: |

Why would a water heater run out of hot water faster than normal? |

If your water heater is running cold easily or frequently then several things could be happening. First check the shower head volume if shower's are too quick. A new shower head puts out about 2.5 gallons a minute. Some older heads put out 5 gallons a minute. Working with the shower head would double shower length in this case. In some cases, the dip tube on the cold water inlet has broken or worn. When this happens, it creates a short loop for the water, water at the bottom half of the tank will not be used, which makes half of your tank useless. Get it fixed as soon as possible. |
